I’m not sure what you might have heard about the Britain’s Next Top Coach competition but in a nutshell, against the backdrop of the 2012 Olympics, the organisers are looking to engage and inspire the people of Great Britain to believe in themselves, the power of their dreams and to step up and take action instead of feeling victims of their life circumstances. As a reader of this newsletter it is almost certain that you will have several – or more – books, audio programmes, downloaded reports, press cuttings or DVDs about personal development and coaching. You will hopefully have read or listened to them all at least once. How many of their suggestions did you implement?

Set yourself a realistic target to review each item again, this time with a pen and paper to hand. Note at least five actions to take as a result of your review of each publication. Then act.

‘I have always been someone who wanted to know what was round the corner, where would I be this time next year – 2 years – 5 years and so on. Britain’s Next Top Coach competition is a great showcase for all coaches and because there is a long term plan, coaches will be able to get great exposure. The entry is free and the competition will be televised with full National launch and media exposure.

Even if you do not make the final, you will still have entered the competition and can use this in your marketing. So all you have to do is enter and submit a video of your work (easy to do these days with digital camcorders) and you are in the running for national media exposure. If you are hesitating about entering, I would not be surprised if you do not have as many customers as you would want. Marketing requires action. ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS Top

There is a common error made by most entrepreneurs. Whether or not they have a formal business plan, a surprising number of people are too optimistic when projecting customer numbers, turnover and profits. As if this is not bad enough, they compound their errors by then under-estimating their costs, overheads and time needed to drive things forward.

You can avoid these mistakes by working out your plans by whatever methods you favour. Then halve your projected benefits and double your anticipated costs or double your time frame. It can be a shock to face these facts. It will be an even bigger and expensive shock to trust to luck and to kid yourself. The price of disappointment can be that you give up all together and that for me, is too high of price for you to pay. Please temper your enthusiasm and passion so that it supports you for the long term and join coaching groups and networks to keep up your momentum. If you have trained with us, make sure you regularly visit the Achievers' Club to keep on the cutting edge of the coaching world and share ideas and questions with the other outstanding coaches in our community.

COLIN'S COFFEE BREAK Top

Our coaching columnist at large examines the value of statistical data and then ignores much of it.

Most of the coaches that I have known, like other self employed professionals in private practice, considered themselves to be running a small business.

That word ‘small’ can be defined in many ways depending on who you ask and the circumstances of the firm. For instance, if you are wondering about the legal necessity to register for VAT, the law requires this once your business has annual sales £67,000+. In a recent newspaper article it was stated that the rules for the Financial Services Compensation Scheme define a ‘small business’ as having no more than 50 employees, a turnover below £6.5 million or a balance sheet below £2.5 million.

By this reckoning I probably don’t have a small business or even a tiny business. It might not even be a mini-business or perhaps, a micro-business. You may even think it isn’t a business at all and that all I have done is to create a job for myself. How about you and your venture?

Just as size means different things to different people, so does age. I read about a ‘young businessman of the year’ who was 34 which I would have figured was approaching middle age. At the other end of the spectrum there are increasing numbers of ‘olderpreneurs’, a name for the entrepreneurs who have already celebrated their 50th birthdays. That would include Richard Branson [58] and, according to Warwick Business School, 15% of all self employed individuals.

As someone once said, ‘there are lies, damned lies and statistics’. The answer may be to take a wide angle view of statistics that are offered to us as facts, then apply our own common sense and experience before reaching any conclusions and, especially, before taking any actions based on them. Take the above age example which may provide fodder for headline writers but is otherwise pretty useless because age doesn’t necessarily influence the success levels of any business or individual. Some achieve success whilst they are still at school and others don’t even get within sniffing distance of it at any age.

The conclusion is that age is immaterial and should never be used as an excuse for doing – or failing to do – anything that is within our physical and mental capabilities.

Despite a pragmatic attitude to statistical data, I have certainly used it to business advantage. As a serial entrepreneur I have had a couple of enterprises that needed VAT registration and found that this duty added significantly to my workload with no commensurate increase is wealth. As a result I maintain a keen awareness of changes to personal tax allowances, national insurance limitations or advantageous grants, benefits and initiatives.

In your own business, professional practice or career, stay alert just in case you find yourself inadvertently in a trap where you could actually be better off by earning less. As for ageism, I wish you a happy birthday whenever it occurs and suggest that you celebrate in the knowledge that you are neither too old nor too young, you are the ideal age to do whatever you plan to do in the year ahead.
